Tomorrow is the release of the season finale of Invincible Season 3! This season has generated a ton of buzz online and continues to receive rave reviews as each episode releases. Though I haven’t written about it here yet, Invincible is one of my favorite shows/comic series of all time and is home of some of my favorite characters. As my hype for the finale reaches critical levels, let me take a moment to give some quick thoughts on everything we’ve seen so far!
Warning: light spoilers ahead for Invincible seasons 1-3!
The Invincible Premiere

Invincible season 3 had an interesting release schedule, as the first three episodes premiered on the same day, before the show switched back to weekly releases. I honestly think this was for the best, as the first three episodes releasing together was a great way to build up hype at the beginning, and the week to week schedule after that kept the hype and speculation going.
It also helps that the premiere episodes were genuinely some of the best episodes of the show up to that point. The way the episodes follow up on the threads set up in season 2 is fantastic. Of course, central to these episodes (and this season more broadly) is the conflict between Mark and Cecil. This conflict feels especially entertaining, impactful, and earned because it’s so realistic. This batch of episodes feature some of the strongest dialogue in my opinion – it’s realistic in a way that I feel like most screenwriters could only dream of (I give a lot of the credit to episode 2’s writer Helen Leigh). The strong dialogue makes the fight’s beginning and escalation feel very human.
Besides this great conflict and the awesome dialogue, the biggest standout in these episodes to me was Mark’s brother, Oliver. I feel like it could’ve been very easy to make this character annoying or free of agency, but he’s very endearing and feels like he has the capacity to act and change. We already see him grow throughout these episodes, and it’ll be awesome to see how he reacts to some of the events the series seems to be setting up!
A Slight Disappointment
I think the only episode I wasn’t in love with so far in this season is episode 5, “This Was Supposed to Be Easy.” It’s not a bad episode, and I enjoy the reintroduction of Titan and some of his foes. But, this episode did have a visible downgrade in animation and felt a little disconnected from the tightness the rest of the season had. I don’t want to get down on the animation too much, both because it’s a done to death topic and because I don’t feel like the animators are at fault. However, the obviously lower budget mixed with this slightly less exciting piece of the story led to maybe my only dissapointment of the season.
The Invincible War

Juming ahead a few episodes, my new favorite episode of the entire show is “What Have I Done?” Is it maybe just the hype still overshadowing my views? Quite possibly. But the alternate Invincibles are my new favorite antagonists of the show, they are just so entertaining. I also really love Angstrom Levy’s sort of ‘arch-nemesis’ role in the story. Something I really love about Invincible is how it feels so real, specifically with how characters are reintroduced and how it feels like multiple events can actually take place at the same time, and both of those things are on full display with Angstrom’s return.
I really hope it’s not too long before we see more of the alternate Invincibles, as I really want to see more. But, as it was, this episode was basically everything I wanted. It felt like a huge, game-changing event, and set up quite a bit for the future. I only wish that it was a little bit longer… and that the Spawn cameo was still in it.
Looking Ahead
The future of the series is looking bright! I’m very excited to watch the finale. Hopefully it isn’t too long before we see more, but if we do have a bit of a wait I’d completely respect it for the animators’ sake.
I definitely want to jump into Invincible more in the future, so stay tuned for that! For now, I hope you enjoyed some of my jumbled thoughts about this season thus far and are just as excited as I am for the season finale!
