I Finished Bloodborne.

Informal thoughts on a brilliant game.

May 21, 2025

Well, my dear hunters. I am delighted to announce that I have recently finished Bloodborne. This game has really sat with me since I completed it. It’s genuinely special and I wanted to give some informal thoughts on a few aspects of the game that really resonated with me! This will be a spoiler-free post, but I do highly recommend this game and I think some of my points will be clearer if you have played it before.

The World and Story

This is probably the number one aspect of Bloodborne that people will point out, and I agree – it’s incredible. I say that both the world and the story are one aspect together because of how closely they are link. Bloodborne utilizes its world to tell the story phenomenally. There are so many interesting details, lore tidbits, and important story elements littered in every part of Bloodborne‘s world.

Something I really love in games is when the world is so big that it doesn’t require you to visit every major area, and still fills huge regardless. Bloodborne certainly has this effect, as there are several areas that are hidden or unlockable early that are entirely surpufluous to the main story progression – but these areas add so much to the world and flesh out the story in such unique ways that I genuinely couldn’t imagine it without them.

Above all, it feels like the medium elevates this story and world in a seamless way. This story would still be interesting, entertaining, and impactful if it was just a written tale. However, the fact that we get to explore the world and make our own decisions and experience everything first hand adds so much and it really feels like this story could’ve only existed like this in a game.

Combat

Bloodborne has amazing combat. It takes the iconic dance of combat from the other souls games and turns it into something a little more agressive and frantic. Playing the game with a gun in one hand and a changable weapon in the other is really interesting and it gives the combat an interesting flare.

I’m a big Elden Ring fan, but I think I ended up preferring Bloodborne‘s combat a little bit more by the end of my first playthrough. It may not be as fast or flashy as Elden Ring, but it has so many unique elements that make it feel like the perfect fusion between Souls combat and a survival horror game.

The Creatures

Finally, I just need to express my love for the creature design in Bloodborne. Every inch of this world is crawling with weird, grotesque beings and I adore it. This game also introduced me to one of my new favorite video game enemies in the blue aliens (that isn’t their official name but they’re blue and look like aliens so I’m going with that). They’re so cute and gross all at the same time that I couldn’t help but love them. The creature design in this game really sucks you in and immerses you in to this strange, lovecraftian world.
