What Surprises Will Eddington Hold?

Ari Aster’s next film releases this week!

July 16, 2025

This July has been a special month for movies. While we’ve had blockbusters sprinkled throughout the year, this July feels like it’s been when things have been picking up. Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and Fantastic Four: First Steps all releasing in one month is an insane lineup with huge franchises that’ll excite a lot of people.

However, amongst all these other big releases, one movie has quietly held my interest for some time. And that movie is Ari Aster’s next film, Eddington. Now, truth be told, I am not necessarily a huge Aster fan. I haven’t seen Hereditary or Midsommar, which together made him a household name and a bit of an indie-darling amongst horror fans.

Why am I so excited then? Well, two years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Beau is Afraid in theaters, which will forever hold a place in my heart as one of the weirdest and most entertaining theater experiences I’ve ever had. I just went to a random showing a week or two after it released and even in that showing, people walked out during it, people laughed, cheered, gasped, and by the end of it, the few people that were left just kinda looked around at each other and silently exited. It’s a long, shocking, and deeply strange film, which is probably why I really enjoyed it.

So, seeing the person that made that make what is described as a “modern-western movie,” I couldn’t help but be excited. Besides the fact that I love the cast and really enjoyed Aster’s last project, I’m a big fan of the aesthetic of western-movies being used in unique contexts. And this seems like a really unique movie from the few pieces of marketing I’ve allowed myself to watch.

So, what surpsises will this movie hold? I’m not sure to be honest. Part of me is hoping for some crazy, bombastic ending twists and reveals like Beau is Afraid, but even if we don’t get that, I’m still just interested to see how Aster handles a subject like political disagreements in modern America. I hope you have the time to check out one of the big new movies this month, and if any of this sounds interesting, I hope you’ll check out Eddington too! Who knows, it may be bad, but I’m very excited to see something that will assuredly be unique.
