August 20, 2025
This is something of an emergency post for me, as this news took precedence over anything else I could write about. Because tomorrow, at 10:30 AM EST, Team Cherry has a very secretive special announcement scheduled to go live about the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong. For those of you that don’t know, I am a HUGE fan of 2017’s Hollow Knight. I have played it endlessly and ultimately reached 112% completion. So, I have been very, very excited for the long-awaited sequel to release.
After years of non-answers and false leads, we were finally given the firm answer that Silksong would release in 2025. And now, during Gamescom, Team Cherry announces that they have a special showcase tomorrow morning. And I’m wondering… is the game going to release then?
There is some level of precedence for this. Hollow Knight shadow-dropped on the Nintendo Switch during a direct in 2018. Additionally, Team Cherry aren’t really strangers to releasing new information or merch drops with little to no prior warning. I definitely think it’s possible, but I am personally not in the camp that it will happen.
As exciting as that would be and as much as I’d love for it to happen, I honestly think it’s more likely that we’ll have more of a Super Mario 3D All-Stars situation. That game came out of nowhere and suddenly released around two weeks after the first trailer dropped. I think it’s very possible that tomorrow we’ll get a release date of sometime in September, with a physical copy published by Fangamer coming sometime soon. The only wrench in this plan is that Microsoft has promised that Silksong will be available on the Xbox Ally X at its launch, which is set for October 16th. It’s unclear if Microsoft means that it will release on the launch date of the handheld, or if it will launch before its release and simply be available at launch.
Even beyond all of that, it is possible that it will simply be delayed again. I don’t think that’s what’s in store for us, but it happened with the high profile Grand Theft Auto VI earlier this year.
Ultimately, I will be very excited to just have any tangible information at all. The game is playable at Gamescom and it has been teased at presentations throughout the year, so it’s certainly on the horizon. I can’t wait to hear more!
